How do I start using a talker?

To connect to a talker, you need some kind of 'client' on your computer. It is possible to use the standard 'telnet' program that comes with practically any computer, but there are better choices. (Especially if you are using Windows -- the built-in windows telnet program does not work very well with Ds Wonderland.) We recommend that you download and install Pueblo instead. (Pueblo is an excellent, freely downloadable talker client for Windows.) For links to other freely available clients, see our links page.

How do I connect to Wonderland?

To visit Wonderland, you have to tell your client to connect to the address dswonderland.com port number 6969. To do this with Pueblo, click on "Edit your personal list", choose "Add" in the dialog box that pops up, and type Wonderland in the "Names" field, type tdf.ca in the "Host" field, choose "Talker" as type and type 6969 in the Port field. Click on "Okay" and you should be ready to go.

What happens when I first logon?

When you connect to Wonderland, you should see something like this on your screen:

Username:

Choose a name for yourself. Take some time thinking about your choice, this is the name which the others users will know you as. A name like 'HornyToad' is probably not a good choice.

If the talker answers with New user. Welcome! this means that the name you chose was available. If you are only asked to enter your password, this means that the name is already in use and you have to select another one. (Just enter anything to get back to the Username: prompt.

Choose a password. We strongly recommend that you don't use a password at Wonderland that you also use for other purposes! Once you have entered your password, you will see the current rules. Read them! If you agree to follow the rules, confirm your password by entering it again. The talker will then ask you a few questions about your age, gender and D/s status. All of these can be changed later if you make a mistake.

If everything goes well, you will end up in the cafe, the main room of Wonderland, and you will see a description of the room as well as a list of all users who are currently in the room with you. You are all set to start exploring Wonderland and making new friends.

Basic commands

To say something that will be visible to everyone in the room, just type it. All other commands start with a dot (.)

.help
This command lists all commands that you can use. To see what a command does and how to use it, type .help <command>. For example .help menu
.emote
This command lets you "perform an action". For example if your name is John and you type .emote smiles, it will show up as John smiles. (Shortcuts for .emote are : or ;)
.tell
This command allows you to send a private message to another user (even if they are not in the same room as you are). Example: .tell potifar Hi. Note that not everyone appreciates unsolicited private messages, especially not of the kind "Dominate me NOW!!! I'm so horny!".
.pemote
This command allows you to send a private emote to another user.
.who
This command shows a list of everyone who is currently logged on to the talker, which rooms they are in and how long they have been online.
.go
This command allows you to move from room to room.
.sos
This command allows you send a message to every admin who is logged on. Use this if someone is harrassing you or if you are hopelessly stuck, and you will get help.
.rules
This command displays the rules of Wonderland. Pay attention to them, they will be enforced.

This was just a short list to show the most common and most important commands. For a full list, check the commmand help page or use the online help and ask around in the talker if you get stuck.

Tips for new users

The most important tip for a new user is be yourself. Make friends. Join in on the conversation. Ask questions. Be friendly, respectful and if you are a male sub, don't throw yourself at every Domme you encounter. Most Dommes at Wonderland want to get to know the subbies before playing with them. Some Dommes are not looking for anyone at the moment. Respect that. Don't send .tells to all women online asking them to play with you. That will only result in annoying them, and word about your behavior will probably spread quickly.

However, if you do take time to get to know other people on the talker, show that you are interesting, polite and friendly, there is a good chance that you will find someone who is interested in playing with you. Be patient.
